Kates, Griffith, Erickson and Crimmins two-fer highlight Sports Park Raceway season opener
The Sports Park Raceway kicked off the 2021 season Friday under sunny skies and new ownership at the popular dirt oval in Fort Dodge, Iowa, with five classes of machines putting on an awesome show for the fans.
Friday’s Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series event featured United Plant Services USRA Modifieds, Marsh Concrete USRA Stock Cars, On The Go Lock & Key USRA B-Mods, Pickett Salvage USRA Hobby Stocks and Matt's Tire Service USRA Tuners.
In USRA Modified action, Adam Kates of Tonganoxie, Kansas, bested the field of Iowa racers to score his career-first modified victory. Chase Ellingson of Iowa Falls claimed runner-up honors followed by Greg Elliott of Webster City, Jesse Ely of Webster City and Waterloo’s Devon Havlik.
Bill Crimmins of Fort Dodge took the lead on the sixth lap of the Stock Car main event and led the final dozen circuits to score a $1,000 victory over a hard-charging Derek Green of Granada, Minnesota. Myles Michehl of Fort Dodge, 12th-starting Chanse Hollatz of Clear Lake and Shawn Ritter of Keystone rounded out the top five.
It was a familiar face in the winner’s circle when Webster City’s Ty Griffith took the checkered flag with more than five seconds to spare over Josh Appel of Garner. Jared Timmerman of Norwalk nabbed third, Hunter Longnecker of Woodward was fourth and Jason Bass of Fort Dodge raced from 15th to fifth.
Jeremy Crimmins made it a family affair in victory lane when the Fort Dodge racer conquered a tough Hobby Stock field from his ninth starting spot. Second place went to Slater’s Eric Knutson with Bryce Sommerfeld of Fort Dodge, Daniel Ayers of Webster City and Riley Crimmins of Fort Dodge completing the top five at the finish line.
In the USRA Tuner feature race, Jaedon Erickson of Welcome, Minnesota, took the checkered flag first with Humboldt’s Jade Lange crossing the stripe second. Tayla Lange of Ames was third, John Dahlsten of Pomeroy finished fourth over Josh Dahlsten of Pomeroy.
